Varian Village is one of the most distinctive villages in Alborz Province and is considered one of the attractions of Karaj and the Karaj–Chalus Road. What sets this village apart from many other villages in Iran is its unique location on the other side of Amir Kabir Lake (Karaj Dam) and its unusual access route. The village is surrounded by a lush mountainous landscape, while the reservoir, the Alborz Mountains, and the surrounding orchards create a remarkably scenic setting.
Because of this unique feature, Varian is known among tourists by names such as the “Water Village” and the “Venice of Iran.” However, the title “Iran’s only water village” is mainly a tourism nickname rather than an official designation.
Where Is Varian Village?
Varian is located in the Asara District of Karaj County, along the Karaj–Chalus Road and beside Amir Kabir Lake. Administratively, the Asara District includes the rural districts of Adaran, Asara, and Nesa.
The village is located approximately 25 kilometers from the beginning of the Karaj–Chalus Road. However, reaching the village itself requires more than simply driving along the Chalus Road. Since Varian lies on the other side of the reservoir, the final part of the journey is made by boat.
Why Is Varian Known as a Water Village?
The story of modern-day Varian is directly connected to the construction of Amir Kabir Dam. Before the dam was built, the old Varian Village was located in an area that is now partly covered by the reservoir. Following the construction of the dam and the formation of the lake, the geography of the area changed, and parts of the village’s orchards and agricultural lands came to lie along the eastern shore of the reservoir.
As a result, present-day Varian was effectively left on the other side of the water, and its direct land connection was lost.

However, there is an important point that visitors should keep in mind: Varian is not a conventional public tourist destination with unrestricted access, like a park or an ordinary tourist village. Prior arrangements are required before entering the village. Some sources indicate that access is generally intended for homeowners, guests of local residents, or visitors who have made arrangements in advance.
Therefore, it is advisable not to travel to the pier or attempt to take a boat to the village without prior coordination.

Amir Kabir Lake is the most prominent natural feature in the landscape of Varian. Located along the Karaj–Chalus Road, the reservoir is surrounded by the Alborz highlands on one side, while Varian Village lies across the water.
The combination of the calm waters of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the region’s vegetation creates one of the most beautiful natural landscapes along this part of the Chalus Road. The Asara Municipality also highlights Varian’s location on the other side of Amir Kabir Lake and its boat access as distinctive features of the area.
Shah-Dazh Peak and the Surrounding Mountains
Varian is also of interest to hiking and mountaineering enthusiasts. The northern slopes of Shah-Dazh Peak extend toward the Varian area, and the region is considered one of the routes used by mountaineers to climb the peak.
Shah-Dazh Peak is reported to have an elevation of approximately 2,803 meters, and the surrounding mountain trails offer beautiful views of the region.
However, the mountainous trails in the area are not suitable for people unfamiliar with mountain environments. Climbing to higher elevations requires appropriate equipment, preparation, and sufficient experience.

In addition to its natural attractions, Varian has preserved part of the traditional rural culture of the Alborz region. Tourism sources identify Tati as the local language spoken by the people of Varian. Best Time to Visit Varian
The best time to enjoy the natural beauty of Varian is generally spring and early summer. During this period, the surrounding landscape is lush and green, the orchards are particularly attractive, and the mountain climate is cooler than in the nearby cities.
Summer is also a good season for enjoying the village’s nature and pleasant mountain weather. However, the Karaj–Chalus Road can experience heavy traffic during holidays and weekends.
Autumn and winter offer a completely different view of Varian, but traveling during these seasons requires more careful planning because of the cold weather, mountain conditions, road conditions, and more difficult access.
Is Accommodation Available in Varian?
Varian is primarily known as a destination for nature lovers and day trips and should not be considered a conventional tourist destination with numerous hotels and accommodation facilities.
Given the village’s special access conditions, anyone planning to stay overnight should make the necessary arrangements in advance.
For a short trip, visitors can also include the natural attractions around the reservoir and along the Chalus Road in their itinerary and visit Varian itself only if access to the village has been arranged.
