<\/p>\nSamskandeh Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important protected areas in Mazandaran Province and one of the valuable natural attractions of Sari city. Covering an area of approximately 1,000 hectares, it is located about 10 kilometers southeast of Sari and is part of the Hyrcanian lowland forests, which today are among the few remaining remnants of this type of ecosystem in northern Iran.<\/p>\n
In addition to its environmental value, Samskandeh is known as one of the key centers for the protection and breeding of the Persian fallow deer and the Caspian red deer (northern red deer). The area is managed by the Department of Environment and plays a significant role in rebuilding the populations of endangered species.<\/p>\n

Samskandeh Wildlife Refuge is located in Mazandaran Province, in the eastern part of Sari. It lies along the Sari\u2013Neka road and is accessible after passing through the suburban areas and near Shahid Zare Forest Park. Its geographical position places it within lowland and plain forests that are ecologically highly valuable.<\/p>\n
Due to its proximity to Sari, this refuge is one of the most accessible protected areas in northern Iran. However, because of its protective nature, free access to its interior sections is restricted, and most visits are made to controlled zones or by prior arrangement.<\/p>\n
Samskandeh Refuge has been under protection since the 1970s (1350s in the Iranian calendar), with the primary goal of preserving and breeding valuable wildlife species, particularly the Persian fallow deer. Over time, it became one of the country’s major captive breeding centers and has played an important role in relocating and restoring populations of this species to other parts of Iran.<\/p>\n
Alongside the Persian fallow deer, the Caspian red deer is also a key species in this refuge. Controlled conditions, managed feeding, and physical protection (fencing around the area) have helped stabilize the populations of these species in recent years and have even enabled their transfer to other habitats.<\/p>\n

The vegetation of Samskandeh Refuge includes valuable Hyrcanian forest species such as hornbeam, ironwood, alder, and shrubs like raspberry. This plant composition provides a suitable environment for various animal species and forest birds.<\/p>\n
In addition to native trees, the area is also home to species such as jackals, jungle cats, squirrels, martens, and wild boars. Birds such as the forest eagle, owl, and wood pigeon can also be observed in this habitat, indicating the region’s high biodiversity.<\/p>\n
The most notable feature of Samskandeh is the presence of Persian fallow deer and Caspian red deer. This refuge is considered one of the main breeding centers for the Persian fallow deer in the country, and a significant portion of the species’ restoration projects have originated from this area.<\/p>\n
The deer population is managed under controlled conditions, and some individuals are transferred to various parts of Iran for the restoration of natural habitats. This has made Samskandeh not only a protected area but also an important research and management center for wildlife in the country.<\/p>\n

Visiting Samskandeh Refuge comes with certain restrictions, as the area serves primarily conservation and research purposes rather than general tourism. However, in some surrounding sections or through special arrangements, controlled visits are possible for nature enthusiasts and environmental science students.<\/p>\n
The best time to visit is usually in spring, when the Hyrcanian forests are at their greenest and the weather is most favorable for spending time in nature. During this season, the likelihood of observing more animal activity is also higher.<\/p>\n

To access from Tehran, first take the Firouzkoh road and head toward Sari. After reaching Sari, continue on the Sari\u2013Neka road. Along this route, after passing the city outskirts and nearing Shahid Zare Forest Park, directional signs will guide you toward the Samskandeh area.<\/p>\n
If traveling from within Sari, you can take Imam Reza Boulevard or the city’s main squares toward the Sari\u2013Neka road, then turn onto the rural side road leading to the refuge. The short distance from the city makes it one of the most accessible wildlife habitats in northern Iran.<\/p>\n
Samskandeh Wildlife Refuge is a combination of Hyrcanian forest nature, valuable animal species, and scientific conservation activities. Although it is not known as a general tourist destination, for those interested in the environment and wildlife, it is considered one of the most important natural sites to visit in northern Iran.<\/p>\n
